Private Duty Nursing (PDN) is very unique, bringing registered nurses and licensed practical nurses into the homes of patients who have chronic long term conditions. PDN is skilled nursing care for children who need individualized, continuous care, on an hourly basis and who meet specific predefined criteria for a medical necessity.
This type of nursing is comparable to the nursing care a child receives in the neonatal intensive care unit. Pediatric RNs make informed observations, chart progress for physicians and specialists to review, administer medications and provide caregivers with education.
PDN is not intended to replace a parent as the primary caregiver or to provide all the care required for the child. The purpose of PDN is to support the care of the child living at home and assist the parent or caregiver so they can provide the care the child needs to stay at home.
Our nurses play a crucial role in helping to:
- Provide respite care
- Decrease hospitalizations
- Provide immediate and effective care
- Educate the family and patient on their condition
- Assist in organizing and optimizing care
- Help all caregivers become comfortable with in-home care
Compassionate Care Provided by Skilled Pediatric Registered Nurses
Pediatric RNs provide personalized in-home care to an individual and their family on a shift basis, typically between 4-12 hours. Children who are approved for private duty nursing often have tracheostomies, ventilators, g-tubes, and j-tubes, which require specialized attention for care and to prevent infection.
Patients utilizing these devices may have a chronic disease resulting in seizures or other life-threatening vulnerabilities. They all require individualized care to decrease hospital visits and improve quality of life. Some of the conditions RNs treat include:
- Frequent seizures
- Enteral feeding
- Cystic fibrosis
- Transplants
- Chromosomal abnormalities
- Tracheotomy or ventilator dependency
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Neurological conditions
Our focus is to provide our pediatric RNs the tools they need to continue to develop their skills while providing the highest level of care for the families we serve. Our nurses are licensed professionals who have gone through rigorous training and have been approved to work by the State of Nevada. They demonstrate competencies, take patient-specific training, and shadow other nurses before they are permitted to provide care and work with families. Nurses coordinate with other members of the healthcare team to deliver a plan of care for each patient, including neurologists, GI specialists, pulmonologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists and dietitians.
