Solace Celebrations | Co-Treatment Gets Luke the Best Out of His Physical & Occupational Therapy
We have the privilege of working with some of the most amazing and determined kids on a daily basis. These children not only work hard to overcome the challenges that they face, but they also so often exceed goals and expectations to truly flourish. It’s for this reason that we love the opportunity to share the successes that we are so fortunate to witness! Last time, you met Skyler who is building his speech skills to gain more independence, and this week we would like to introduce you to Luke who has been making so much progress in both speech and physical therapy!
Luke has been receiving skilled speech and physical therapy services with Solace since November of 2019. During this time, he would on occasion take part in co-treat sessions where Luke would get up and have fun moving with the actions referenced on the physical therapy cards as well as sight-read cards with his speech therapist in between! Fantastic Job Luke!
Using the strengths of two different therapies in one session
Co-treat sessions are therapy sessions in which two different therapists work together and collaborate within a single session. This type of therapy can be valuable in various ways such as creating multiple types of paths to learning content, bringing in diverse philosophies with teaching methods, and also gaining different perspectives to learn the best way to engage with the child and bring out their strengths. With Luke, the combination of adding fun physical therapy-type actions to words he was learning with his speech therapist allowed him to create deeper connections to these words. By doing this, he is not only gaining a new way to remember the words, but the interactive element helps to build upon movement skills in a fun way that both types of disciplines get a boost.
These kinds of collaborative sessions also give the ability to bring in a fresh perspective and new methods that could benefit the way in which the child is learning. For example, if a child is struggling in a certain aspect of therapy, the two therapists may be able to consult with each other for further insight into how the child responds to things in individual sessions. By brainstorming and putting their ideas together, they may be able to come up with a breakthrough that can lead to even better results for the child.
How co-treat sessions can be done effortlessly with Solace and telemedicine
At Solace Pediatric Healthcare, we have some of the most passionate and skilled therapists who take pride in helping the children that they work with reach their peak and can often work in tandem with other therapists to ensure that the child is getting the best possible care and treatment. These types of sessions are not only fun and exciting for the child but they can be done with almost no extra effort with the help of telemedicine. Both therapists will simply be participating on a single screen and working together with the child during the normal time of a session. This way, you don’t have to worry about having more people in your home or trying to make sessions work at times that are not convenient for you and your family. If you are interested in in-home therapy and telemedicine for your child, please feel free to contact us to learn more!
